Why water, sanitation and hygiene education matters

·1 min read·PlanetCare team
An open drain between homes in an urban community

Unsafe drinking water, poor sanitation and blocked drains are among the biggest everyday environmental challenges facing many communities, and they are closely linked to preventable illness. Infrastructure matters, but so do habits and knowledge, which is why WASH education is one of PlanetCare’s core focus areas.

Simple habits that make a difference

  • Wash hands with soap and clean water after using the toilet and before preparing or eating food.
  • Store drinking water in clean, covered containers.
  • Keep drains and surroundings free of rubbish so water does not stand and pollute.
  • Use safe, well-maintained toilet facilities and keep them clean.

Why education comes first

When families understand why these habits matter, they are far more likely to keep them up, teach their neighbours and look after shared facilities. Education also helps communities speak up for the services and policies they need.
